The Hickory Dickory Decks StoryAs the founder and CEO of Hickory Dickory Decks, I welcome you in your consideration of acquiring a franchise. Allow me to provide some history on our company. In 1987 I was employed at a great company called IBM, but realized my entrepreneur DNA was calling and left IBM to start Hickory Dickory Decks. My partner Gary, a home renovation guy, and I, a newly trained salesperson, set out to take over the deck industry. We had no franchise training, no reputation, and no marketing in place. What we did have is drive and determination. After knocking on many doors in new subdivisions in Hamilton, Ontario, I sold our first deck. After five weeks, we had built five beautiful decks. At that time my partner decided to move on and return to home renovations. Now the sole owner, I committed to putting 110% effort into both sales and building and within one month sold the balance of the years work. By year two, Hickory Dickory Decks had grown to 19 employees and was on its way to be the largest deck company in Canada - and possibly the world. In 1999, Hickory Dickory Decks awarded their first franchise to Garth Hutchinson in Whitby, Ontario. Garth came from the renovation market and wanted to concentrate on one trade (decks) instead of 40 home renovations. Whitby is on the eastern side of Toronto, which is Canada's largest city. Our head office is in Hamilton, which is on the western side of Toronto. In 2000, two more franchises were awarded - one to a past employee, and the other to one of our builders. In 2001, three more franchises joined our team. Today, we are the largest deck company in Canada and number two in the world, working in over 50 cities. We are committed to adding ten to twenty new areas in 2009, with a focus on selling out Ontario and adding five to ten franchises in Alberta.
